[Theoretical Debate] What classifies as "undead"?

Post by Comrade Vince on 21st January 2012, 3:06 pm

So me and Soviet had a discussion:

Spoiler:
4:57 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Suppose there were such a thing as undead beings, should they have the same rights as us?
4:57 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: I'd say yes.
4:59 AM - Soviet: Uh, I'd say no
4:59 AM - Soviet: Considering an undead is animated
4:59 AM - Soviet: not alive
5:00 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Suppose they still have feelings, like vampires or ghosts.
5:00 AM - Soviet: But, they don't
5:00 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Vampires do...
5:00 AM - Soviet: Undead don't
5:00 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Vampires are technically dead since they don't have a functional cardiovascular system.
5:00 AM - Soviet: Undeath is a reanimated corpse
5:01 AM - Soviet: It's like if I killed you, then attached strings to your arms
5:01 AM - Soviet: Then controlled you, and you would have rights
5:01 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: No, undeath is anything living which is technically dead.
5:01 AM - Soviet: No
5:01 AM - Soviet: Anything which is dead, but technically living
5:01 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Vampires are undead, man.
5:01 AM - Soviet: Animated
5:01 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: And ghosts too, ghosts act like they do when they're alive.
5:02 AM - Soviet: A ghost is not a body
5:02 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: But it is undead.
5:02 AM - Soviet: And regardless, undead is animated
5:02 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: I disagree.
5:02 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: We should make a debate on this on the forum.
5:02 AM - Soviet: Lol
5:03 AM - Soviet: Put it in general discussion if you make the topic
5:03 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Not Law?
5:03 AM - Soviet: No, because it's not exclusively about Law, y'know? It could be in Science too
5:03 AM - Soviet: Cuz we're debating whether it's dead or not technically
5:04 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: No, science would be the principals of undead, law is about what rights they should have.
5:04 AM - Soviet: None
5:04 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: So they should just be used like common slaves?
5:04 AM - Soviet: A zombie hath no feelings
5:04 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: That hardly seems ethical.
5:04 AM - Soviet: No, they should be quarantined, like a person with a highly contagious disease
5:05 AM - Soviet: See, this is where matters of the greater good come into play
5:05 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: It violates dead human rights.
5:05 AM - Soviet: Lol
5:06 AM - Soviet: We have to protect the living, not the feral
5:06 AM - Soviet: Reanimated
5:06 AM - Soviet: Dead
5:06 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Fine, I'll make a science thread. Because I'd say vampires are undead too, and deserve human rights.
5:07 AM - |PHORSEC| Vince: Let's find the definition once and for all...

Now, what is undead? Reanimated corpses only, such as zombies and ghouls. Or all beings who are previously alive and then dead, such as vampires and ghosts?

Discuss.

If we're using the broadest possible definition, then my closest friend Courtney would be considered as undead, as she remained medically dead for close to an hour, after a failed suicide attempt, and was then revived following being rushed to an emergency room via helivac.

An undead is a entity which was alive, and is now dead, but is reanimated. Zombies, vampires, ghosts; they are not among the living and do not have feelings. They do not need rights. Theoretically. Of course, they don't exist, so, we use the dictionary.

Oxford defines undead as;

Pronunciation: /ˌənˈded/
adjective
(of a fictional being, especially a vampire) technically dead but still animate.

Marriam Webster defines undead as;

the reanimated body of a dead person believed to come from the grave at night and suck the blood of persons asleep

But vampires have feelings, ghosts too. Why else would old ghost ladies always frantically sob all the time?

Crying can be animated behaviour, it doesn't mean the ghost actually feels sadness.

Then why would it cry? Because it's a ghost-actor in a ghost-film?

No, because it's animated. Are we going to continue going in circles?

Undead can be separated into categories. The civilized and the uncivilized. Vampires could be civilized... Ghosts can be trolls or can be helpful. I guess it depends on the context. They're all undead, just different kinds of undead.

I sure hope this is theoretical and you guys don't actually believe in zombies, ghosts, and vampires

Of course not, don't be silly.

Post-Mortem muscular movement is chemically impossible in the bigger picture due to the lack of cardiovascular stimuli or substitution thereof.

Everyone knows that...
