Welcome: To Science!

Post by Comrade Vince on 18th January 2012, 7:58 am

This is the scientific part of the forum, where we all discuss various concepts ranging from theoretical physics, to domestic chemistry. Everything from how life started to the significant historical moments of science. Whether you enjoy the thrills of experimental physics, or the gentle comfort of astrophysics, there is always a place for all kinds of people in the great world of science.

What is science about?
Well, science is about establishing fact, and discovering new ideas. Which ultimately contributes to mankind, one way or another. Some people use science as a weapon, or a tool for their own needs. But often it backfires and still becomes a product for the greater good.

Why so? Because science is a tool of the rational, intellectual and pragmatic mind, and few of those will decree that selfishness is the answer. You simply cannot harness the genius behind science and turn it against it's own purpose. Because it is based on the closest thing we can come to objectivity, and that objectivity suggests that caring for one's fellow human beings is important.

Science gives us the means to solve important problems, and an understanding of our universe.

Great heroes arise from science, and shows how much more significant brains is, as opposed to brawns. Science is the lubricant of human progression, and discussing it is crucial.

I have a few rules on my part of this forum, as science is different form politics:

No pseudo-science. I don't want to hear about "second hand smoking" or "intelligent design". Because particles don't behave like a gas, which means monoxidic residue from a cigarette cannot create a meta-volumetric phenomena which results in people's subtextual consumption of aforementioned substance. Nor is there a giant bearded man in the sky who makes planets orbit by stirring them with a giant, invisible swizzle-stick. As clearly testified by Yuri Gagarin. If you wish to discuss a superstitious thesis sanctioned from the reviews of science: Do so here.

Now, should any problems arise: Contact me.

Also: Criticism is fine, but be courteous, this is science, not a pirate ship! Anyone who is not a proper gentleman will be out of here faster than a neutrino in the hadron collider!

What heroes throughout history are we talking about exactly, Vince?

Ah! Excellent question. We are of course speaking of people such as Dr. Charles Drew, or Nikola Tesla, or even the less famous Dr. Norman Borlaug. Science has many great names in it's hall of fame. Everything from Alexander Graham Bell, to Carl Von Linne. It would take a long time to list all of them, but I hope these examples set the right pattern.
